November 1, 2, and 3 were once-in-a-lifetime experience days for me and several other blogger/influencers who converged in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the first-ever Wagner Painting InSPRAYtional event, hosted by Wagner staff and style guru Matthew Mead, who many know through Wagner’s FINISH magazine. Many thanks to Danielle at FindingSilverPennies.com for shooting my photo.

Early in March I jetted back to Masterminds Week at the home office of Modern Masters in beautiful Valencia, California. I am always overjoyed and honored to join the superteam of experts there to group-think and produce exciting and new DIY projects using primarily Metallic Paint, Front Door Paint, and Metal Effects.
Can you imagine have every one of Modern Masters products and colors right there in front of you, awaiting magic? Oh yeah. Nirvana.
Fellow Masterminds joining me were Mary Childs of Focal Points, faux finisher, muralist, antiqued mirror guru, and Katie Gaines of Love Paper Paint. You just have to check out Katie’s classy take on weddings, and events in general!
We each took on several projects to be featured seasonally on ModernMastersCafe.com, where our tutorials can be found to inspire you to try new products and techniques. Many are perfect to do with a group, or with kids!
Who knew? I have been a faux finisher for 20 years, always wowed by wall finishes created with venetian plasters. Timeless, elegant, troweled wall finishes. I’ve covered a lot of square footage in show homes, my home, and clients’ homes with this gorgeous product.
Did I ever foresee that Modern Masters Venetian Plaster could be used to decorate huge statement-size Easter eggs, like my elegant blue beauty above? No way!
Here’s my second Easter idea, a simple interpretation of paint and a little nature walk in my back yard.
Mary’s Easter eggs, soon to come, are stunning!
Stay tuned for all of the Masterminds projects coming up during spring and summer. You’ll never be without an idea for your home, gifts, or upcoming events!
I was an instructor for the first two years at the ArtFusion Event, in Santa Fe and Estes Park, Colorado. Words can’t express how founder and organizer extraordinaire Kathy Boyd knows how to get a crowd of the most talented faux finishers and decorative artists together to learn and share.
Returning for the Black Mountain, North Carolina event this fall will be especially fun, as it is only two hours from home, in a gorgeous area I have only passed by for years on the way to Western Carolina University when my daughter Jenny studied there.
Here are a few images to savor, that show a bit about my workshop, titled “Reverse Psychology: Painting On Glass”.
These pieces were hung as artwork, as shown in the side view, however, they can be used as stunning table décor like runners and chargers.
I will also offer optional pre-sales of my wall hangers, and extra glass, to take home for students who may want to dive in and hang, or sell, their pieces back at home – add create new ones quickly.
Stay tuned for more images, and even though it seems like a really long time until September, classes sizes are limited. There are so many exciting options to choose from right now – amazing instructors and workshops all during five days.
Also, be sure to follow the ArtFusion Event on Facebook to see more evolving details that Kathy will be posting!
Hope to see you in Black Mountain in September…
I have been a passionate reader of Where Women Create magazine since it was first launched. As a lifetime artist – illustrator first, then faux finisher and DIY project blogger – I have always had a studio. Some tiny, one even in an 1890s flannel mill.
No matter where I created my own magic, I was curious about other women artists, their studios, and their personal stories about how they made art for a living like I do.
I was so pleased to be featured in the current issue, photographed by my friend and fabulous stylist and magazine guru, Matthew Mead! Many folks over the years have asked me how I began my journey, and to share some of my secrets. In this issue, find out my story as I have never told it before.
And savor every word by so many other accomplished artists!
Where Women Create has given me a copy of this issue to give away, and even if you already have your coveted issue, you may want to receive this one to share with a friend.
Just hop over to the post on my Facebook page, until midnight Tuesday, December 13, leave a brief comment about your life as an artist, or ask a question about creating a studio, or selling your art. One winner will be selected randomly and notified after December 13th. Where Women Create will send the winning copy direct. (Sorry, but only to USA addresses.)
And yes, how cool is it that Matthew has included several of my favorite blog projects and home vignettes in his magazine. Along with one of my design idols and authors, Mary Emmerling, and new-found designers that I am now loving too.
On of my favorite artsy endeavors is to draw 8″ by 10″ ink and watercolor furbaby portraits for holiday gift-giving! For yourself or a loved one, this is a heart-felt gift that I find often turns out to be a remembrance of a love now in heaven.
Order now to assure delivery in time for gift-giving! I will ship to you, or gift-wrap at no extra charge and send to the recipient.
I am so thrilled to be an instructor for 2 workshops next week at ArtFusion!
The annual multi-day event/convention for the professional and aspiring Decorative Painter and Artist features workshops, speakers, product and tool demonstrations, displays and lots of networking. Some fun extras include an artist’s live auction, live music, Fauxtini party and competitions.
Classes include mixed media, decorative painting, decorative concrete, encaustics, business, molds, concrete carving, epoxy art, alcohol ink, furniture painting, cabinets, Italian plaster, business and marketing and more. Instructors from all over the world.
Many classes are full, and some still have an opening or two. With so many choices of amazing instructors and workshops, and cheap flights on airlines like Frontier, there’s still time to attend at the very last minute!
Excited to see all of those taking my workshops, and can’t wait to take the oh-so-talented Darlene McElroy’s class on Wednesday! It’s titled “Mad Scientist.” Who can resist?
Do you ever have to pinch yourself sometimes when something wonderful and unexpected occurs?
I was so thrilled to host stylist, paint guru, photographer and magazine master at our home recently! I bet you already follow Matthew Mead and are as big a fan of him as I am. His talent, enthusiasm, and ideas are limitless, and he’s a blast to hang out with.
My hubby Steve built a giant party deck on our home years ago, and every couple of years we need to give it a good power wash and paint it. Then, magically, I discovered the Wagner Flexio 890 sprayer and suddenly painting the deck was no longer a dreaded chore.
Get the details on how I did it, and see how Matthew and I styled the deck for fall in the new issue of FINISH, Wagner’s online DIY home design magazine here. Be sure to share the link with your friends, too.
There are are so many fun, creative, and easy painting projects in FINISH, you will come back to it again and again. And the heat gun pumpkins ( AND heat gun popcorn)… brilliant. Not to mention Cari Cucksey’s baby room!
While you’re there, check out photos of my studio, with a few words of painting wisdom from me while you’re there in Shop Talk.
