My Funky Holiday Mantel Decorating In Our Cozy Den

This rustic fireplace is perfect for some funky decorations

Our den is where we truly live in the evening. We are empty nesters, and admittedly, we eat dinner here, watch movies and sports here, and find ourselves quite entertained by our three calico kitties each night. The fact that red leather furniture and a crusty old red door make up the décor means decorating for Christmas is a snap. In fact, decorating the mantel with lots of natural holly and large branches in the fireplace that stay in place all year is quite speedy.

The Reveal! Orange Teak Master Bedroom Furniture Goes Weathered Grey!

Orange teak goes weathered gray

Recently I posted several times about transforming our three large master bedroom furniture pieces. They are 1970s Danish modern and after many, many years I was so eager to get rid of the orange hue and change to soft, weathered gray. I prepared for my large refinishing project first by using my Color Inspiration Notebook. I created it as a fun tool to assist DIY furniture painting project lovers with color inspiration and selection. The built-in color wheel walked me right through my basic color scheme. It confirmed that I was happy with my accessories and the major teal color, accented with a bit of green and metallics.

The huge dilemma was what to do with the teak – eeekkkk. It seemed to grow more orange every year! The platform bed and two large dressers are loved for their simplicity and have been perfect for storage capacity (there are drawers under the bed).

How to design a furniture finish using the Color Inspiration Notebook

Monday I used the Notebook to choose a basic color scheme for our master bedroom – and discovered I am really happy with the colors and accessories I already have.

Tuesday I narrowed down a new furniture finish that I fell in love with for three large pieces – a platform bed and two big dressers. Decided it is not right. Awesome look, but too barn woodish.

Wednesday I used my Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan color swatches to select finish colors.

Today let’s design the finish.

How To Use Your Color Inspiration Notebook For A Project! (Part Three)

How to use your Color Inspiration Notebook for a project

This week we are using the Color Inspiration Notebook to work on my master bedroom redo – the primary objective is to refinish three large pieces of furniture. Platform bed and two large dressers. Holy cow. They are 30 years old, wonderful, but the teak seems to get more orange by the day. Not the look I am going for. Continue reading

My Notebook is a power-packed little tool. It’s only 6″ by 9″, but it is stuffed with inspiring details. Take the built-in color wheel, for example. It includes the traditional colors, plus neutrals and metallics:
