And yes, how cool is it that Matthew has included several of my favorite blog projects and home vignettes in his magazine. Along with one of my design idols and authors, Mary Emmerling, and new-found designers that I am now loving too.
As you can see, Buggy Buggerson immediately claimed ownership of this little upholstery loveseat, which is right in the soft afternoon sun. I wrote the blog project for Royal Design Studio‘s PaintAndPattern.com blog and it was a favorite by readers in 2015, and me, including folks at ApartmentTherapy.com!
Wow, what a great year in the Blue Sky studio!
I have been looking back on so many blogging projects that I worked on during 2015 that you may have missed.
During December I will share some favorites – those perfect for quick Holiday projects, and some that I just loved doing.
Here’s a simple, fun, perpetual calendar I made for PaintAndPattern.com, with Royal Design Studio numbers stencils, Chalk Paint and Soft Wax by Annie Sloan. There’s still time to make a bunch for stocking stuffers!
Thanks to Royal Design Studio, and their fun tiny new stencils and one-time-use modello patterns, our deck is brimming with flowers, ferns and fun. During the month of May, for Paint+Pattern, I worked on three summer deck projects that really made an impact our our outdoor living space.
Here are some quickie sneak peeks.

Recently I posted several times about transforming our three large master bedroom furniture pieces. They are 1970s Danish modern and after many, many years I was so eager to get rid of the orange hue and change to soft, weathered gray. I prepared for my large refinishing project first by using my Color Inspiration Notebook. I created it as a fun tool to assist DIY furniture painting project lovers with color inspiration and selection. The built-in color wheel walked me right through my basic color scheme. It confirmed that I was happy with my accessories and the major teal color, accented with a bit of green and metallics.
The huge dilemma was what to do with the teak – eeekkkk. It seemed to grow more orange every year! The platform bed and two large dressers are loved for their simplicity and have been perfect for storage capacity (there are drawers under the bed).
Here at My Patch of Blue Sky, I spend quite a lot of time stenciling projects for Paint + Pattern Design Magazine. I truly love the process – and all of my posts.
But this recent cabinet project was special to me. The piece was painted out in Old White Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan for months, waiting for inspiration. Suddenly, I discovered two of the loveliest new stencils released by Royal Design Studio and my mental magic happened!
In our only guest room filled with flea market finds, old books and North Carolina pottery treasures, I wanted to create a soft exterior with just a hint of pearl:
Do you crave the look of white upholstery for your home? Are you hesitant to try it? I know. I was too. Fifteen years ago our girls were young teens with lots of friends. Weekly sleepovers were part of our lives and our little kitty menagerie was just beginning. Soft drinks, sticky and greasy snacks and well, kitty fur everywhere.
