And yes, how cool is it that Matthew has included several of my favorite blog projects and home vignettes in his magazine. Along with one of my design idols and authors, Mary Emmerling, and new-found designers that I am now loving too.
Last week I was blissfully working away in Valencia, California, at the offices of the fabulous Modern Masters team! Along with fellow faux finisher and decorative artist, Mary Childs from Orlando, we each created seasonal DIY projects, to be debuted prior to each holiday.
What an honor and a treat to play with many of my favorite products while conjuring up projects I think you are going to swoon over. Watch for cool and creepy Halloween ideas, coming soon, on the ModernMastersCafe.com blog!
During Masterminds week, I later discovered, one of my Modern Masters Front Door Paint projects, using the bright green color Fortunate, was featured in a color-trending story about Modern Masters, by writer Bonnie McCarthy, of the Los Angeles Times.
What a coincidence!
I hope you’ll hop over to the story and check out the bright and inspiring front door projects by fellow bloggers, TheTaleOfAnUglyHouse.com, RobbRestyle.com, ColourSaturatedLife.com, and SpoonfulOfImagination.com.
Effortless artsy, rusty, crusty effects are all the rage right now, thanks to Modern Masters and their fabulous Metal Effects line. They’ve also recently introduced Metal Effects Kits in Rust, Green and Blue Patinas, available online at TheHomeDepot.com. If you love crusty stuff, like old cars, metal accessories, and even artwork, we are kindred spirits. For years I have been scavenging in the local junkyard for years to grab gorgeous scraps of real copper and rust, made by nature, to incorporate into custom metal artwork for clients.
Are you snowed in? We have been for a couple of days this week, enjoying the wintery weather a bit, but also dreaming of spring and anxious to see the yard and blooms again. I decided to venture into my studio and take advantage of the quiet time to conjure up a very simple dimensional hand-painted wall, furniture, or canvas art finish. I used leftover paint and products: some Wood Icing® Textura Paste to add dimension, Chalk Paint®, a large graphic flower stencil, and Modern Masters metallic paints.
Voila! This finish is artsy, easy enough for the snowed-in-kids to help with, and fast-drying.
2015 was an exciting year for me, getting to explore even more of Modern Masters product line, particularly Metal Effects, to create rust and fabulous patina. I think these products have exploded in DIY popularity due to their ease of use, and wondrous unpredictability.
As a creative, tutorial-focused blogger, I am ever grateful for opportunities to work with companies like Modern Masters, who appreciate the power of letting artists like me take off and explore new possibilities with their materials.
So looking forward to working with you again in 2016 – and Periscope!
Thank you Modern Masters for including me to spread the good word about your amazing products during 2015!
Rust, crust, and patina, on letters, home accessories, artwork, focus walls and more! Here’s a look back at a favorite art project that I did for our master bedroom, using a old ceiling tin mounted on a wooden frame.
Are you nuts about anything covered in rust and patina? Me too. There’s so much you can do with Modern Masters Metal Effects products, and more secret stuff I will reveal during this class.

The Art Ladies. A unique, dynamic group of my long-time friends who originally bonded during our term as board members of the local Artists’ League. For almost 15 years we have met for dinner one a month to talk art, learn from each other, challenge each other, and share our lives.
Thanks to Royal Design Studio, and their fun tiny new stencils and one-time-use modello patterns, our deck is brimming with flowers, ferns and fun. During the month of May, for Paint+Pattern, I worked on three summer deck projects that really made an impact our our outdoor living space.
Here are some quickie sneak peeks.
Recently I experienced some creative excitement that really got my heart beating. Packages from Modern Masters arrived on my doorstep, chock full of their Metal Effects products. My goal: to create something rusty and fabulous with gorgeous green patina like you find on ancient hardware and statuary.
I have spent over 15 years as a full time faux finisher, yet I never discovered these crazy fun, addictive products! I know you have seen stunning finishes on walls and furniture on Pinterest and in magazines and drooled over the look thinking they are impossible for a DIYer to achieve.
Oh, it’s so not so!
